Back pain is what brings many patients to visit every CIM chiropractor looking for relief. It is a major problem in the modern world. Statistics from the American Chiropractic Association and the National Institute of Health show that:
- 31 thirty million US citizens suffer from back pain at any one moment.
- It is estimated that up to 80% of Americans will suffer back pain at some point during their lives.
- Every year about 50% of employed Americans have the symptoms of back pain, and in any three-month period one in four U.S. adults have back pain on at least one day.
- Back pain is the second highest reason for visits to the doctor’s office (the top reason being chest infections).
Those figures present a general overview of averages but within them some people are at greater risk than others. If you want to know the likelihood of YOU suffering from back pain then be aware that the factors that increase your risk are:
- Poor physical condition. People who are not fit are more likely to have back pain.
- Being overweight. Carrying too much weight places stress on the structure of the back and this can produce pain.
- Age. Back pain becomes more likely as you get older, and particularly so once you once you reach 30 or 40.
- Disease. Some diseases, including certain types of arthritis and cancer can produce back pain.
- Your occupation. If you have to perform strenuous activities like lifting, pushing or pulling while your spine is twisted, or if you sit at a desk and adopt a poor posture you may experience back pain.
- Smoking. We are all aware that smoking is bad for our health, but what is not widely understood is that smoking can cause back pain. If you smoke you may not get sufficient nutrients to your back, and you may get ‘smokers cough’, both of which may cause back pain. Also, smokers are slow to heal, and so back pain can be more persistent.
